No Sacrifice, No Victory ~ Chapter 2: The Reaper Base
The girls had a tough fight ahead of them. The geth were emotionless, ruthless in their fight, but Shepard and her team proven they could handle this mission, despite the difficulty. Upon arriving at the Reaper Base, the looked out at the machinery. It was an impressive, yet frightening sight. Shepard leapt down to a lower area, her crew following her. It wasn't long before they had to duck and fight more geth troops. Samantha Traynor was soon heard in their helmet's earpieces.
"The geth jamming towers are interfering with the signal, Commander. I'm compensating to keep you patched in."
"You work hard, Traynor." Shepard said in the heat of the battle.
A yelp from Cyn'thea was heard as the large Geth Alpha shot her in the side. Despite her wound, she kept fighting, gritting her teeth in the process.
"Legion...is counting on me. I can't let him...down..." She thought to herself. It was her resolve. Legion needed her, as her team.
After what seemed like hours, they finally caught a break. Shepard looked over the top of the base while Tali applied medi-gel to Cyn'thea's wound.
"How is she?" Shepard asked, glancing over her shoulder briefly.
"She'll be alright, Shepard." Tali replied, nodding.
Shepard nodded back, then returned her gaze back to the large pit before them. She put away her shotgun and pulled out her targeting gun. EDI's voice suddenly alarmed Shepard.
"Normandy's weapon systems are ready to sync to your target, Commander. I recommend you withdraw to a safe distance."
Looking through the scope, she aimed at what looked to be a large red light. Pulling the trigger, it began to make a whirring noise as she watched the scanners sync to the Normandy's weapon systems. A ding signaled to Shepard that the sync was complete.
"Target locked!" EDI exclaimed as the Normandy flew overhead.
A missile shot from the ship and hit the center directly, sending debris flying. The force shook the platform Shepard was standing on. The Commander lost her balance and tumbled below, landing on a lower metal platform.
"Commander Shepard!" Both quarian ladies exclaimed with alarm!
"Are you alright?!" Cyn'thea questioned, looking around for a way to get down there to help but there didn't seem to be any passages.
"I'm fine." Shepard assured her as she sat up slowly.
Suddenly, the ground began to shake once more. Strange noises arose from the pit they shot at. Shepard stood up and looked over curiously. Something large came up from the center, a large mechanical thing. Shepard's eyes widened at the terrifying sight. To her left, another, smaller ship approached. Inside of it was none other than Legion! His fingers tapped at the controls quickly as he saw what was unfolding.
"I will be your mode of transportation." He said quickly.
"Copy that!" Shepard nodded and turned to the quarians. "Everyone! Get in the ship! MOVE!" She shouted the order while reaching behind her for her targeting gun once again, just in case.
Cyn'thea was fast on her feet, grabbing Tali's wrist as they booked it down to the lower area and toward the ship Legion had acquired for them. The mechanical horror they saw got longer and came down hard in front of them like a giant leg. The red light rose, gazing a Shepard. It was a Reaper eye!
"How are we supposed to fight that thing?!" Tali exclaimed, fear woven in her voice.
"I was hoping your fleet might lend a hand!" Shepard shouted as she made it to the escape ship. "GO!!!"
One of the geth they had shot got up, grabbing it's gun and was aiming for the Commander. Tali got up behind it, stabbing it fiercely in the back. It dropped instantly. Cyn'thea shot her pistol at it to make sure it wouldn't get up again. She looked around to see if there were anymore geth coming to slow them down.
Slowly rising from the pit was the mechanical menace known as a reaper. It was enormous in size, towering over the base like Godzilla in Tokyo. BRRRRRRR! It made a loud, almost angry noise as it turned itself around to face the team that dared to strike. Shepard hopped into a machine gun attached to the ship, whirling it around to aim at the reaper while Tali and Cyn'thea loaded onto the ship.
"We will attempt evasive maneuvers!" Legion said as his fingers worked the controls.
The vehicle immediately took off. Shepard began firing at the reaper as she tried to contact the quarian fleet. "Shepard to Fleet! This isn't a Reaper Base! It's a live reaper! I need an orbital strike!" She exclaimed. She continued to fire multiple shots from the machine gun, even overheating it a few times as Legion was doing his best to get the team out of there safely. The reaper wasn't making it an easy task as it maneuvered towards them. Just then, a missile shot at the reaper, knocking it for a loop, giving the team enough time to find the perfect spot to land. Another strike sent the reaper toppling over and the red light soon went out.
"We did it!" Admiral Han'Gerrel exclaimed with both shock and joy.
"The firing chamber...." Shepard began as she replayed the missile hitting the reaper in her mind. "....looks like a weak point when it's priming."
"Damn it! The jamming towers have us targeting manually. We can't make a precision shot." Gerrel growled.
"We may escape before it recovers." Legion added.
"No. Pull over." Shepard ordered. Legion did as Shepard commanded, the vehicle stopping on some rocky ridge a little ways from the reaper.
"Shepard-Commander?" He asked, wondering what the hell Shepard was doing.
"Commander? What in the world are you doing?! We need to get out of here before that monster gets back up!" Cyn'thea pleaded, praying her Commander would get back on the ship.
Shepard walked a little ways, looking at the reaper then back at the ship. "If we run now, the geth stay under Reaper control and the quarians are dead." She turned back to face the abomination machine. She narrowed her eyes, full of determination. "This ends now!" Shepard tapped her helmet. "EDI! Patch the quarians to the Normandy's weapon systems. I want the targeting laser synced up to the whole damn fleet!"
"Understood." EDI replied.
Tali looked on, feeling just as nervous and worried as Cyn'thea. "If this doesnt.....if we don't make it...."
"You worry too much." Shepard said with a confident smirk.
"Good luck, Shepard." Tali nodded.
"Y-yes....good luck...." Cyn'thea bit her lip, holding back a whimper.
"Keelah selai." Shepard said simply. Those words spoken by her hit the quarian girls hard. They had to have faith in their Commander. Tali put her arms around Cyn'thea and she reciprocated the gesture. It was comforting. Together, they prayed for their Commander's safety.
Shepard readied her special targeting gun. "Shepard to Fleet! I'll peg the weak spot! Link up with the Normandy and be ready to fire!" She commanded to the Flotilla. With careful aim at the eye, she pulled the trigger as the reaper shot at the Flotilla. The Flotilla reciprocated by sending a missile right at the reaper, knocking it off balance for a moment.
"Shepard, the Destroyer is in range. Missiles are ready for launch." Admiral Daro'Xen reported.
It slowly got up and stepped a bit closer to where Shepard was. Shepard held her ground, taking aim once more and pulling the trigger. However, the reaper intercepted, shooting its deadly beam at the ground, leading up to where Shepard was standing. She quickly rolled herself to the right and took aim again, pulling the trigger. Just as the reaper was about to send off another shot, a missile struck it again, stopping the reaper in its tracks for a moment.
Recovering from the recoil, the reaper got back up and stepped even closer to Shepard, practically right up in her face. She aimed high at the red eye as it began to glow. This was her last chance. She had to get this right. She pulled the trigger and the gun began to take aim as the reaper was starting to fire. Time seemed to slow. Shepard could feel her heart pounding in her head and chest as the red beam was priming itself in her face.
The missile came down hard on the reaper and it stumbled slightly as it was bombarded with several more missiles, letting out a mechanical screech of pain. It tried to push itself back up, turning it's red eye towards the Flotilla. A rain of missiles greeted it before it could fire again, causing the reaper to emit another screech. Red colored electricity surged through it as it finally toppled over and its red eye disappeared.
"SHE DID IT! SHE DID IT!" Cyn'thea cheered within the vehicle, bouncing with Tali'zorah. Legion's plates shifted as he seemed to smile a bit himself. "Well done, Shepard-Commander." All three of them exited the vehicle to join Shepard by the cliff side, gazing upon their biggest triumph yet.
"Whoa....I can't believe you actually did it...this is amazing, Shepard!" Cyn'thea could hardly contain her excitement. Her cheerful glee soon turned to a look of terror as the reaper's eye moved and began to glow again. She felt it's gaze heavily upon them. Swallowing hard, she began to tremble, eyes wide like a deer in headlights. Legion took note of Cyn'thea's body language. He knew it meant she was scared and she had every right to be. He came up behind her and immediately pulled her against his chest. While it didn't stop her shaking, it gave the frightened quarian some security.
"Keelah...." Tali'zorah gulped, standing close to the Commander. "How the hell is it still online? We saw the Flotilla blow it up!"
"....Shepard..." The reapers voice boomed in their ears, causing Cyn'thea to flinch and Tali to jump back a little.
"You know who I am?" Shepard questioned the reaper, a bit surprised it had knowledge on her.
"Harbinger speaks of you..." it replied immediately. "You resist.....but you will fail....the cycle must continue....." The reaper held no emotion in it's words. It was cold, calculating as it spoke to her.
Shepard's eyes narrowed at it's words. "Funny....I killed Sovereign....and now you." She pointed at the newly fallen reaper confidently before crossing her arms over her chest.
"We....are many......" It stated simply.
"But we are more!" Shepard retorted with a snort. "And we'll work together to defeat you. All of you."
"You....cannot comprehend the magnitude of our presence."
Unfolding her arms, she approached the reaper as far as she could go. "We might surprise you." She gave a firm nod.
"You represent chaos. We represent order. Every organic civilization....must be harvested in order to bring order to the chaos. It is inevitable. Without our intervention, organics are doomed. We....are your salvation." The reaper explained in monotone.
Shepard raised a brow, listening to the reaper's prattling. She was hardly convinced of such rubbish. Far as she could tell, the reapers were chaos in themselves. She turned to her left for a moment as Tali gathered the courage to move back to the Commander's side, crossing her arms, then looking back to the crippled reaper. "Hmph! I have a better idea....we destroy you and live our lives in peace!"
"A philosophy reminiscent of the quarians. Observe the results--"
Shepard interrupted the ominous words of the reaper. "You....Whatever species you came from....before the Reapers decided to preserve them....they're dead. They died thousands of years ago."
Suddenly, the red light of the eye shut off, as if Shepard had struck a cord or perhaps the reaper wished to not speak anymore as this argument could go on forever. Regardless of reason, the conversation was clearly done. Shepard lowered her arms with a heavy sigh.
"And now...they can rest in peace."
